Home Smoke Detectors

Photoelectric Smoke Detectors

Photoelectric smoke detectors alarm when light is reflected by the smoke onto a sensor.  Photoelectric smoke detectors respond faster to smoldering fires that produce a  larger amount of smoke.

Ionization Smoke Detectors

Ionization smoke detectors contain a small amount of radioactive material in a chamber within the detector.  When smoke enters the chamber it interrupts the electrical charge which makes the alarm go off.  Ionization smoke detectors alarm faster to flaming fires which produce less smoke.
